Notes
The AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway is the 25th race on the 2013 Sprint Cup Series schedule.
Originally called Atlanta International Raceway, the track was then a 1.5-mile speedway. The track was re-measured to 1.522 miles in the spring of 1970. It was renamed Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1990. The track layout was reversed and re-configured to 1.54 miles between the two races in 1997.
Atlanta Motor Speedway has 24 degrees of banking all of its turns as well as 5 degrees of banking on the frontstretch and backstretch. The length of the frontstretch is 2,332 feet, and the backstretch measures 1,800 feet.
There have been 105 races in NASCAR's premier series held at Atlanta. Until 2010, there have been two races per season except 1961, which had three. This year marks the third season with only one event.
Fireball Roberts started on the pole and won the inaugural Cup Series race at Atlanta, the Dixie 300, on July 31, 1960.
Dale Earnhardt holds the record for most victories at Atlanta with nine. Cale Yarborough has the second most wins there with seven. Bobby Labonte leads all active drivers with six victories at this track.
Eleven drivers have posted consecutive wins at Atlanta: Marvin Panch (1965 sweep), Bobby Allison (1972 sweep), David Pearson (1973 sweep), Richard Petty (1974 fall, 1975 spring), Cale Yarborough (1980 fall, 1981 spring), Bill Elliott (1985 sweep; 1992 sweep), Dale Earnhardt (1989 fall, 1990 spring; 1995 fall, 1996 spring), Bobby Labonte (1997 fall, 1998 spring), Jeff Gordon (1998 fall, 1999 spring), Carl Edwards (2005 sweep), Jimmie Johnson (2007 sweep). Denny Hamlin is the defending race winner.
The Wood Brothers hold the record for most car owner wins at Atlanta with 12. Hendrick Motorsports is next in line with 11 victories, followed by Joe Gibbs Racing with 10.
Buddy Baker and Ryan Newman share the record for most poles at Atlanta with seven each. Newman, who is in his final season with Stewart-Haas Racing, won six consecutive poles there from 2003-05. His most recent pole at this track came in the spring of 2007.
The race winner at Atlanta has started on the pole 14 times, but no driver has accomplished that feat at this track since Kasey Kahne did it in March 2006.
Since NASCAR began using electronic timing and scoring in 1993, the closest margin of victory in a Cup race at Atlanta occurred on March 11, 2001 when Kevin Harvick beat Jeff Gordon to the finish line by only 0.006 seconds.
Carl Edwards and Harvick are those active drivers who scored their first career Cup victories at Atlanta. Harvick, in just his third start, claimed his maiden win in the series there in the spring of 2001. Edwards won his first races in both Nationwide and Cup at this track in March 2005.
Two drivers entered in this weekend's race made their Cup debuts at Atlanta: Jeff Gordon (Nov. 15, 1992) and Martin Truex Jr. (Oct. 31, 2004).
Kyle Busch is the youngest driver to win a Cup race at Atlanta. Busch won the spring event there on March 9, 2008 when he was 22 years, 10 months and 7 days old. When Morgan Shepherd was 51 years, 5 months and 8 days old, he became the oldest driver to win at this track on March 20, 1993.
The 26-race regular season in the Sprint Cup Series concludes with the Sept. 7 Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Clint Bowyer is the defending race winner.
